Fabriano: Museum of Paper and Watermark
Inside, there is a faithful reproduction of the medieval process for making handmade paper. The collection also contains a very important collection of old and modern watermarks: during the tour, in addition to watching a video about the history of paper, it is possible to view the demonstration of the production of handmade paper with paper masters.
A medieval paper mill has been rebuilt on site, where it is possible to observe the entire processing cycle. The rags, cleaned from the "stracciarola", are soaked in the "maceratoio" and reduced to pulp by the action of the hydraulic piles with several hammers. By dipping a special sieve in the "container" where the pasta was transferred, with appropriate shakes to drain the water, the pasta takes the form of sheets, which are placed on a felt and pressed in a press. After drying, the sheets are immersed in an animal gelatin bath, known as glue, for the purpose of rendering them impervious to ink; dried and pressed again, the sheets are ready for use.
In the library of the museum it is possible to buy a variety of handicraft products, made with handmade paper and bound in natural leather. On reservation it is possible to attend educational workshops, even several days.
